Two women roast red peppers over a fire, near a street corner in Macedonia. When Iris sent me the initial photo to use as inspiration for this painting, taken in the area where her husband grew up, I was excited for the opportunity to capture the warmth of this significant place for them.
Iris also sent me some pages from a cookbook, written in Cyrillic (Macedonian alphabet). One of the pages was incorporated into the first woman’s skirt as a collage element. I love the visual texture of the the beautiful writing. And can’t you almost hear the crackle of that fire as its flames cook those peppers?
